Sätila of Sweden
Sätila of Sweden
Founded in 1896 in the village of Sätila in western Sweden
Sätila of Sweden is a knitwear manufacturer established in 1896 in the small village of Sätila on the outskirts of Gothenburg, Sweden. Founder Johannes Nilsson initially worked with linen and cotton textiles, which were woven by local farm women using simple machines and supplied to shops in Gothenburg. Between 1910 and 1920, the business shifted from weaving to knitting, and in 1943, his son, Kjell Grebelius, took over the company. It was officially registered as "Nilssons Trikåfabrik" in the 1950s.
Reaching the world with the "Stenmark cap"
In the mid-1970s, the brand gained worldwide recognition thanks to the knit cap worn by alpine skiing legend Ingemar Stenmark, known as the "Stenmark cap."
Still in the same place, and the same family
For over 130 years since its founding, the company has kept its office, warehouse, and factory on the same site, remaining in the village of Sätila. It is still owned by the founding family, with the third generation currently serving as the majority shareholder. Over 90% of its products are knitted in-house, making it one of the few brands that maintains full-scale production within Sweden. Approximately 25% of its production is completely integrated, from knitting to sewing and finishing, all done under one roof.
At the intersection of outdoor and lifestyle
While its roots lie in the outdoors, Sätila now positions itself at the intersection of functionality, quality, and lifestyle. The company leverages over a century of accumulated expertise in knitting techniques, material selection, and product development, backed by a vast archive of patterns and its own in-house design team. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technological innovation, they create products built to last—whether in the mountains, on the trail, or in everyday life. They are a world-leading name in knit accessories, including hats, headbands, and scarves. Furthermore, the company has been a long-time supporter of the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, the country’s largest environmental organization.
